What is DMD?

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare progressive muscle wasting condition that primarily effects males.

It effects approximately one in five thousand live male births and is the result of a mutation on the dystrophin gene. As this condition is carried on the x-chromosome, females are more likely to be a carrier, and a manifesting female is even rarer, with only one in approximately fifty thousand births resulting in a female with DMD.

People who have DMD experience progressive muscle weakening due to the mutation in their dystrophin gene. They will use mobility aids from a young age and rely on a wheelchair from their mid to late teens.

Currently, there is no cure for DMD. Cardio myopathy and respiratory complications are the leading causes of mortality in people with DMD.
